While the Industrialization was blossoming, so was the Romantic era in Europe. Romanticism emerged in visual art, literature, and music of this time. This period of art reflected intense emotions of this time such as awe, horror, and apprehension. Romantic art often expressed feelings on the verge of being mystical and just out of reach. Art was often influenced by greek mythology and heroic legends and it often reflected the changing times and technological reforms.
One example of a romantic era art piece is JMW Turner's "Dido Building Carthage". This oil painting has many different angles and perspectives showing the multiple points of view he is trying to convey with his romantic artwork. The colors are rich and vibrant and the landscape shows Carthage as paradise. Turner's art encouraged the development of Impressionism and abstract art. Another example of a romantic era art piece is the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Many writers of this time, including Shelley, were influenced by nature, human emotion, compassion for mankind, freedom of the individual, heroism, and rebellion against the changes of society. With the rapid change of life and technology occurring, people were in awe and also in fear of what the world was coming to. Shelley's novel represents the negative side to Industrialization and how you can take something like a man and turn him into a monster. She uses ideas of heroism and rejection to create a captivating romantic novel. |
